The colors are all very bright and swirling, and look psychedelic; nothing is the color that it should be. The computer was working fine last night, but when I turned it on today the problem started. I have my laptop hooked up to a desktop monitor(because my laptop screen doesn’t work), so I’m not sure if it’s the monitor or the graphics card or something else on my laptop. I have Windows XP. I am no computer expert, but I think it may be the back light that has gone.
What I need to know is how easy it is to replace the back light, and is it something that can be done at home.
Alternatively, if I need to take it to a repair shop, what is the cost I would be looking at paying £ sterling (UK)

I was watching a video and it started to skip. The monitor was working fine so far. But after I restarted it just went to a blank screen. The computer still booted since I could hear the windows chime when it loads up. But I cannot see anything. I have a Geforce 8600gts and usually the fans would slow down due to inactivity or low performance usage. but this was constant speed on. I’ve used the a different monitor and still have the same problem. I do not have have a different computer to test the monitors.
