How do I get my xbox up on my computer monitor?

So I have the vga cable plugged in to the monitor and the audio cables in to my computer.

How do I actually get the xbox screen up on my monitor? There is an av sign (the little box with the arrow through one side?) on the monitor but when I press it the screen just goes black.

Any ideas?
what are tower plugs?
My computer monitor is a Dell inspiron 531.
