how do i use old computer monitor as a duel screen to my macbook?

okay so i have a new macbook october 08 version. but i also have a compaq monitor that went to my old computer
now that i’m full on mac i wanted to know how i can use the computer monitor as a 2nd screen. i’ve tried researching but found not much. what cables do i need? set-up? any answer responded to would be great

    If your Compaq monitor is VGA, then you need the Apple miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter to connect it to your Macbook:

    If your Compaq monitor is DVI, then you need the Apple miniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter:
