I am looking to buy an LCD monitor and I have found a variety of contrast ratios and sellers trying to boast about them. I have seen from 800:1 to 10000:1. Which one is better? What should I be looking for in an LCD monitor?

The higher the contrast, the more clear the picture will be. However, some contrast ratios are skewed because there is no definitive way to measure contrast ratio so some companies put numbers that don’t really mean anything.

Its the range of how bright and how dark your LCD can be. Higher is better, but in my opinion contrast ration isn’t the most important thing you should look for in a new LCD monitor

obscure bits of info just ignore them. It’s one of the things that people show off that doesn’t actually mean anything. there has been testing done and contrast ratio doesn’t make much of a difference in viewing quality.

LCD monitors use a backlight to illuminate the displayed image. Consequently, black shades when displayed on an LCD monitor looks more like grey.

The higher the contrast of the monitor, black shades will look less grey.

This is important to some folks (particularly those who like to watch Blu Ray or DVD movies or do graphics artwork). It’s a matter of personal preference.
