Just bought a new computer monitor today and it is blurry/ can anyone tell me why?

I bought a 17 inch flat screen monitor today and I love it because it takes up so much less space but the screen is blurry like the focus is not quite right. The desktop is blurry too before I even sign on to the computer. Any ideas?
