My computer monitor is on the fritz, can you help?

Last night while using the computer, I turned around to pet my dog and when I turned back, the monitor was black.
I have checked all the connections and they are fine,
The power light on the monitor will no longer illuminate. My question is this:
Is this more likely to be the monitor or the video card, etc within the computer? The monitor is about 5 years old, a flat screen and it has flashed a few times of late, just to black and then right back.
