What resolution will I get with PS3 in my computer monitor?

Using PS3 with the cable with red,white and yellow plugs, if I use a converter plug to my DVI port of my LCD computer monitor, what sort of resolution would I get? My monitor can do 1680 x 1050.

I have a computer monitor with both a VGA port and a DVI port. The VGA port is currently used by my computer. I have an open DVI port. My monitor is a HP 2009m which has built in speakers and are the ones I use.I know I can get an HDMI to DVI but will that transfer the sound. If not, what will I need and how much will it cost?
