When you use a tuner capture card, the only HD channels you can tune into are the local channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, etc.).

You will NOT be able to tune into any of the QAM-encrypted pay HD channels like Discovery HD, HBO HD, CNN HD, etc. No computer tuner/capture card can decode QAM due to copyright restrictions.

Those unencrypted local channels you can see will be broadcast in 1080i, but your video card will shrink it down to 720p because that's the only HD resolution your 1280x1024 monitor is capable of displaying.

As far as the pay channels are concerned, with a tuner/capture card you can only tune into the standard-definition (i.e. 480i low-definition) versions of those channels.
