Erick asked:

I share 1 home desktop computer with a couple of my roommates. But my roommates tend to leave the computer running all night, and never bother to turn off the pc & monitor. In result, I suffer the consequence of paying a higher electricity bill due to my roommate’s inability to turn off the computer when not been used. What’s a good software program someone can recommend me to that can shutdown the pc & monitor when the cpu is idle?

None, as that will do more harm then good. It’s best the turn the computer off the old fasion way. That is the best and safest way. If you allow a program to do it for you, that can cause you to lose data among other things. Lindsay G

If you’re running Vista, its completely simple! Just go under control panel and under the Power Options Tab you’ll find an Advanced Settings link. Click on it and it will allow you to manage your power consumption. It gives you time in minutes as to how long you want the screen to be on, and even computer, but this just makes it go into stanby, or sleep, mode. Another thing, if you are planning to make the computer go into sleep mode after a certain amount of time, I strongly suggest enabling Hybrid Sleep. Hybrid Sleep is a new invention of Microsoft that allows the system to save the memory from any open programs unto the hard disks so when a power failure occurs no data is lost if and only if the system was sleeping. In the case that you have another Operating System, there are many free ware programs that make the computer sleep after a certain amount of time like; Computer Consultant, or even Computer Profiler. I don’t really know how to turn off both of cpu and monitor, but if you want to turn off CPU only, you may use DShutdown it’s freeware and rich of features.
it is doesn’t matter to leave monitor idle or in orange light cause it doesn’t consume so much electricity. kang
