Why does my computer monitor turn off for 40 seconds, then on for 2 minutes then off and on again?

My new computer monitor turns off for 40 seconds then automatically turns on for 2 minutes then off again, and the cycle continues. Moving the mouse or hitting a key does not turn it on, so I don’t think it’s in hibernation or sleep mode. Please help if you have any ideas. Thanks
